Wear all your gear, or don't ride!

Postby MSGT-R » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:19 am

During the last part of April, I was riding my 81 Goldwing (a classic restoration) down a secondary boulavard towards home on a sunny afternoon - not much traffic at all. An approaching mini van started to come into the center turn lane to go to the car wash. There was no one else on the road but me and him.

Less than 100-200 feet in front of him, he began his left turn!

I attempted to swerve, but no room. The left front of my Wing impacted the front bumper of the Voyager and stopped the bike dead. I was lauched over the bars and through the windshield of the wing as it spun around backward and tumbled down the street @ 40 mph. I woke up in the Ambulance, then again in the ER.

I had bruised ribs and contusions to my shoulder, knuckle, knees and hip. I had severe vertigo for a couple of weeks. I went into surgery to put 9 screws and a plate into my left ankle where it was broken from being pinned between the bike and van bumper, then pulled loose when I was ejected.

The bike had hardly a panel that was undamaged. Lots of frame and engine damage totalled the bike. The trademark Goldwing engine that sticks out the sides with it's hefty crash bars saved my leg from any further damage; the engine took the initial impact. I was wearing all the correct gear from my helmet to my steel toe work boots, or I would have been hurt far worse!!

Wow, sorry to hear that. I'm on the road for work and see so much scary stuff that not even a car feels safe anymore. I also do some work occasionally out in Rhode Island, which doesn't have helmet laws and it almost gives me chills when some guy blows by at 70 with a tank top, shorts and no helmet.

Yeah, they do that in Colorado too. They're called "organ donors".

Take a piece of 40 grit sand paper, vigorously rub it up and down on your kneecap (with gusto). Tell me how much that hurts...

Sliding on pavement without armor is like putting a power sander on your leg and turning it on.
Jeans won't help you at all against impact, and they will shred in less than a second.
Google Images: type in "Motorcycle Accident" and look at the reality.

Ticketed.
As far as penalities, I'm not finished with his arse yet. My bike is settled, but my medical bills and lost wages are still coming in. He's not libel to forget about looking for motorcycles anytime soon..

I got my cast off Wednesday. It' good to be able to take a shower without having to bag my leg in trash bags and rubber bands. The first thing I did was to soak my foot! Nervana.

I have almost no motion in my ankle. It's going to take a lot of work to get back to normal. Today I actually took a couple of wobbly steps with a single crutch, so things are looking up. 8)
